Capture Field Values

Step-by-step instructions: Enter the values an Assignment takes in and produces
Updated 1 day ago

Fields are the typed values an Assignment takes in and produces, such as a new hire's name or a laptop's asset tag. A Procedure's authors define its Fields (see Define Procedure Fields); you enter their values while you work the Assignment. Each value is captured where it is owned: the Assignment's own Inputs & Outputs on its Info tab, and each Step's Fields on that Step's Task.

Enter the Assignment's Inputs & Outputs

  1. Select the Assignment and press the Info tab in the detail pane.
  2. In the Progress panel, fill in the fields under Inputs & Outputs. An Input badge marks a value the work starts from; an Output badge marks a value the work produces.

Each value saves as you enter it. Inputs are often filled in already: the member who assigned the Procedure, or the Trigger that started it, may have supplied them.

Enter a Task's Fields

  1. Select the Task and press its Info tab.
  2. Fill in the Fields section, just above the Completion Status control, so entering the values and completing the Task happen in one place.

A File Field has an upload button; a Yes / No Field is a switch with a Clear button to remove the value.

Required Fields

A Field marked Required is listed in a "Required Fields awaiting values" notice until it has a value. Completing or Skipping a Task that is still missing a Required Field asks you to confirm first, in a Complete Without Required Fields? (or Skip Without Required Fields?) dialog. Press Complete Anyway (or Skip Anyway) to close it without the value, or Cancel to go back and enter it.

Frozen values

Once a Task closes, the values captured on it are frozen: they stay on the record and can no longer be changed. Hover over a frozen value to see why.

See every captured value

Press the Assignment's Fields tab to see every Field the Assignment takes in and produces, its value, and where it was Captured at: the Assignment itself or the Task that owns it. A Field with no value yet shows "Not yet entered"; press a Task name to open the Task that captures that Field.
